Cellophane

Cellophane is used to provide a sealing agent supplement to other lost circulation material in water based drilling muds. It is also a basic additive in cement slurries, providing a matting effect in the control of losses. Typical rates of addition up to 2% by wt. cement are used as a preventative measure.

The loss of circulation during a primary cementing job is a serious problem. It usually results in having to do some remedial cementing. Circulation losses tend to occur in vuggy cavernous formations and particularly in highly fractured incompetent zones. These zones may break down at relatively low hydrostatic pressures. For this reason Cellophane has found a wide application in routine cementing operations. Application rates may vary between 1-20 kg/m³ with normal applications around 5 kg/m³ of cement. At concentrations above 20 kg/m³, bulk loading and mixing of the cement slurry becomes extremely difficult. Cellophane has temperature limitations, but even in high temperature environments, the material is generally effective long enough to merit its presence.

Oilfield and Non-Oilfield: Mix into a viscous mud with agitation. Cellophane will not pass through the shaker screen. In order to maintain the Cellophane concentration in the mud the shale shaker must be by-passed. Note: Bypassing the shaker could result in plugged jets.

Cementing: Add the Cellophane to the cement slurry in the mix tub prior to displacement. No special mixing precautions are required when mixing Cellophane. Care should be taken to avoid mixing the product too quickly as Cellophane will have tendency to plug lines.
